Friday 1st January 2021 we had an Australia versus ROW International Challenge. Simple rules for this – play for your country of birth. Unfortunately this year ROW was short of players and had to “conscript” some from Australia. In this case it was the last 4 players to arrive that had to give up their Australian identity for the afternoon.
I must admit when Dave called on Thursday with the news regarding the JSA, I went from feeling well organised to what do I do next/first! However thanks to Dave, Harry T and the ladies at the JSA we managed to get what we needed, paper work wise and alcohol wise, out of the office. Hopefully it will all be sorted soon and everybody can get back to normal.
Did forget the music machine, but with the laughter being generated from each green don’t think we would have heard the music anyway.
It was another nice day in Perth last Friday and very pleasant to be playing later in the afternoon out of the heat. Hopefully it gave people time to catch up with their families and friends as well. We had a total of 50 players split over Greens B and D – thanks Keith for rolling them for us.
Some of the games seemed to be neck and neck for a while until Australia just started to race ahead and win (thrash is probably more appropriate)
Scores were: Australia 142/90 (Australia 6 rinks and ROW 1 rink)
Best overall team: Shane Nelligan and his team of Jo Nelligan, Beryl Lee and Dot Leslie (21/07)
Best ROW team: Barb Lord and her team of Richard Wyatt, Lynne Plenderleith and Nigel Poulton (17/16)
Best dressed: Kim Oakley
Now that I have had time to look at the cards, I see that we need to add another prize into this competition for highest number of shots on one end. The winner this time would have been Mike Wyndham and his team of Derrick Howarth, David Jackson and Pauline Poulton (8)
Hope everyone enjoyed themselves and that you will all join us on Australia Day for another fun day in the sun.
Barb, Ladies Captain and the Match Committee
When I think of Twilight Bowls it’s something that you do just as the sun is going down, perhaps with a wine in hand (off the green of course) and you can take off the sunnies and enjoy a nice summer night in shirt sleeves and shorts – not last Friday!!!
I think Nancy and I were expecting about 20 hardy souls to turn up to play twilight bowls in less than ideal condtions.
Astoundingly and very pleasingly, we had 30 people arrive which meant we had to add another rink onto B green as there was also a barefoot bowls booking. We called this rink -1 and it certainly made for interesting bowling. The team on that rink did not win.
When we started the temperature was around 20 degrees – little cool but we played 16 ends and by the time we finished it was down to about 17 degrees – the jackets were on by then J.
We played triples and there were some very hard fought battles with a lot of laughter as well. Most teams were even until a clear winner emerged.
The winning team was Derrick Howarth, Dewi Sasson and Terry Furler.
Well done to everyone for braving the less than ideal weather.
See you all again soon.
Nancy and Barbara
